Oakdale is a hamlet (and census-designated place) in Suffolk County, New York, United States. Oakdale is located in the Town of Islip. It has been home to Gilded Age mansions, the South Side Sportsmen's Club, and the main campus of Dowling College. It is now home to Connetquot River State Park Preserve.
Oakdale has a land area of 3.3 square miles (8.5 km2) and about 0.4 square miles (1.0 km2) is water for a total of 3.8 square miles (9.8 km2). It is bordered by the Great River to the west; North Great River touches the northwest border; Bohemia sits up north; and West Sayville to the west. The Sunrise Highway forms a natural border in the north boundary separating the CDC and the adjacent town of Bohemia which runs across 3.8 square miles (9.8 km2).
In the northwest portion of the Sunrise Highway it splits into two with Montauk Highway heading towards southwest passing through the commerce area or the central area of the hamlet.
It is home to the famous Gilded Age estates namely:
Idle Hour, a 900-acre (3.6 km2) property on the Connetquot River; just east of Idle Hour called Pepperidge Hall; and lastly Indian Neck Hall, built on the east side of Oakdale.
Byron Lake Park at 80 Bridle Way sits smack dab at the center of the entire CDC. 1.11 km away from it is the Parks Recreation & Historical located along the Montauk Highway. Other parks within the hamlet include Ludlows Creek State Tidal Wetlands, Birchwood Green Wildlife Sanctuary. At the eastern boundary of Montauk Highway, then south on Berard Blvd is where the performing arts theater called Kids For Kids Productions Inc CO is located, right across Amity University New York and just walking distance from Bourne Mansion as well. The Town of Islip Housing Authority serves the hamlet. Few places of worship within Oakdale are St John Episcopal Church, and B'nai Israel Reform Temple. Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School is on Oakdale-Bohemia Rd taking north from Montauk Highway or to the south of Sunrise Highway.
