The historic Krisch's Restaurant & Ice Cream Parlor of Massapequa has endured remarkably well since the 1950s, establishing itself as a cherished, family-owned, one-of-a-kind treasure for the area. During the 1950s, it moved to a permanent home in Massapequa and remained there till today.
Today, no matter how hard times get, Krisch's business continues to show signs of strength with its current owner and Massapequa Park resident Steve McCue saying the business has doubled in the past year and is doing well. He attributes the steady success to the strong history of Krisch. The decor at Krisch's gives McCue and his customers a sense of escape. He said that when people get here, they can get away from their everyday life by stepping into a simpler and more innocent era, which will allow them to relax and reconnect with their senses.
In the restaurant, patrons will immediately have an instant sense of nostalgia as they will be greeted with the exact same neon sign that lit up the restaurant when it was first established in Massapequa, New York. Throughout the interior there are vintage Coca-Cola signs, old photographs of Massapequa, old soda fountains and a 10-seat counter dating back to the old-school days.
Taking customers back to the good old days, customers can treat themselves to a traditional burger, fries, then milkshake, and then choose from an array of homemade ice cream flavours that range from FlufferNutter to Cake Batter and Rainbow Cookie. Even though Krisch's is considered a Massapequa jewel, it's also become a Long Island treasure, gaining the attention of residents beyond the town.
As a Bellmore resident of 20 years, Bob Brooks has made Krisch's a part of his lifestyle and family. “I travel here to get the delicious desserts every week," Brooks said. "For my kids, Krisch's is exciting because its old-fashioned way is new to them. For me, it takes me back to my childhood days."
In addition to Vinny Maino and Michelle Breksa of Plainview, the two have made Krisch's a part of their lives as well.
McCue said he made the conscious decision to preserve the original aura and integrity of Krisch's after buying the business from the original owners in 1993. However, he has also ensured that the restaurant is current with the evolving food trends. He plans to roll out a new line of panini sandwiches soon after introducing a series of specialty wraps.
Despite the increasing costs of living, McCue told me his restaurant has managed to maintain its reputation for top-quality food while not raising prices, a feat he feels has provided a sense of empowerment among its customers.
