Shelter Island is a town and island located at the eastern end of Long Island in the U.S. state of New York. Even though it is part of Suffolk County, it is separated by water from the rest of the county. The entire territory is about 29.11 sq mi (75.39 km2), while the total water area is bigger than the land size with 16.92 sq mi (43.82 km2) and 12.19 sq mi (31.58 km2) respectively.
Nestled between the North and South Forks of Long Island, Shelter Island can only be accessed by ferry. Shelter Island Sound surrounds it on three sides, and Gardiners Bay on the fourth. If you go further out, Shelter Island sits in the middle of North Haven to the south, Greenport to the north and Southold to the west.
Shelter Island is home to Suffolk County’s largest nature preserve namely Mashomack Preserve that covers a total of 2,350 acres. Heading south from Mashomack Preserve Entrance just about 1 mile or (1.53 km) you will arrive at South Ferry Inc. which is one of the two transportation available for people going in and out of the island, North Ferry Inc. is the other one located up north.
It is home to many beaches scattered throughout the island such as Wades Beach, Shell Beach, Crescent Beach, Town Landing beach, and Upper Beach; golf courses such as Shelter Island Country Club and Gardiner's Bay Country Club; important gov’t buildings including Shelter Island Town Hall, Shelter Island Senior Citizens and Shelter Island Historical Society just 1 mile apart from each other on the N. and S. Ferry Rd.
