Riverhead, located in Suffolk County, is located along the north shore of Long Island. Riverhead has been the county seat of Suffolk County since 1727, though most county offices are located in Hauppauge. The town lies at the mouth of the Peconic River. Located within the town is the hamlet of Riverhead, which is the town's economic center. The Orient Point-New London Ferry brings you to town 166 miles (267 km) from Boston, and it is 76 miles (123 km) from New York City.

Long Island Sound marks the northern town line, with Connecticut on the other side. Southold is bordered by the east town line. Part of the town is located on the North Fork of the county. Riverhead is the eastern terminus of the Long Island Expressway. 201.3 square miles (521 km2) is the total area of the town, of which 67.4 square miles (175 km2) is land and 133.9 square miles (347 km2), or 66.53%, is water.

At the southern border of the town rests the central area where two major roads namely Nugent Drive or NY 24 and NY State Route 25 or NY 25 are connected by a bridge crossing over the Peconic River. NY 25 is the town’s main road in the south and Sound Ave likewise on the north,  both of which covers the west-east direction of the town heading to adjacent hamlets (Calverton and Aquebogue).

There are several attractions situated in the central area such as the Railroad Museum of Long Island, Long Island Science Center, Long Island Aquarium, Safari Adventure and Riverhead Raceway; to the north is Spirit's Promise Equine Rescue and Beach River. Parks and golf courses within the town are Peconic Estuary, Sound Avenue Nature Preserve, Riverhead Cemetery, Indian Island County Park, Long Island National Golf Club, Cherry Creek Golf Links, Woods At Cherry Creek, The Vineyards Golf Club, Sandy Pond Golf Course, Friar's Head. Suffolk County Historical Society is at 300 W Main St. Long Island Horticultural in at 3059 Sound Ave, to the north.

The Town of Riverhead is served primarily by Suffolk County Transit and Hampton Jitney bus routes. It also contains a minor private-use airport known as the Calverton Executive Airpark, originally the Naval Weapons Industrial Reserve Plant, Calverton.
