Stony Brook is a hamlet and census-designated place in the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County, New York, on the North Shore of Long Island. It is on the North Shore of Long Island, approximately 55 miles east of the New York City borough of Manhattan. The census-designated place occupies an irregular shape roughly 5 miles north to south and 1 mile east to west.
Stony Brook borders Head of the Harbor, St James, Lake Grove, Centereach, Setauket- East Setauket and Old Field to the north. It has a total area of 5.9 sq mi (15.4 km2) of which only 0.2 sq mi (0.4 km2) is water.
NY 25A (N Country Road) and NY 97 (Nicolls Road) passes through the CDP and runs west-east and north-south respectively with both main roads intersecting at the eastern boundary.
The CDP is adjacent to the main campus of Stony Brook University, a major research center within the State University of New York, and also The Stony Brook School, a private college preparatory school. It is also home to the Long Island Museum of American Art, History, and Carriages and the Stony Brook Village Center, a privately maintained commercial center planned in the style of a traditional New England village. Facing the Smithstown Bay are the West Meadow Beach, West Meadow Wetlands Reserve, and Stony Brook Beach. Other attractions and parks within the CDC include Avalon Nature Preserve, Forsythe Meadow County Park, Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium, The Reboli Center for Art and History, The Jazz Loft, Stony Brook Grist Mill, Hercules Pavilion, and The Long Island Museum.
In the area is the Stony Brook station of the Long Island Rail Road Port Jefferson Branch. Penn Station is approximately 1 hour 48 minutes away, including a transfer in Huntington, Hicksville or Jamaica.
