Fire Island's Smith Point County Park is a favorite with beachgoers, sportsmen, surfers and beach lovers. Before you hit the Hamptons, this is the last large Long Island beach around Shirley. Fire Island, in New York, is on the east side of the Atlantic Ocean, and the waterfront stretches from Moriches Inlet to the National Seashore at the end of Fire Island. Many Long Islanders call it Smith’s Point Beach.

In addition to stunning scenery at Smith Point County Park, the park also offers a great camping area spanning 1,380 acres Camping on the beach is available on a first come, first serve basis, beach conditions permitting. Reservations are required for all the sites in the campground. All sites have water, and many have electricity and sewers. Smith Point has a nationally recognized lifeguard team to provide safety protection to ocean visitors when you go swimming. Additionally, there is a small snack bar called the Wave which offers Italian Ices and various snacks.

Everyone who goes to the beach is advised to respect the protective fencing that marks endangered shorebird nesting sites that are found at the shore of the ocean and bay.

Off-road vehicles may be permitted on the western shore of the outer beach so you can have some fun with your 4WD! However, off-road vehicles require a permit.

A pedestrian access tunnel, restrooms, and showers as well as a playground for children are available during the summer months. There is also live music during the week and on weekends. There is a parking fee at there beach and no alcohol is permitted. Near the winding boardwalk there is also a clothing-optional beach area. Yup, a nudist beach!

This is a dog-friendly beach, but all dogs must remain on a leash for the duration of their visit. The number of dogs per person or per campsite is limited to two, if staying overnight. You cannot bring your dog to the life-guarded beach or inside building unless it is a service animal. It is also against the law for dogs to enter closed off areas with wildlife protection.

In order to maintain the beach's dog friendliness, please dispose of your pet's waste properly. You should also remember that the sand can be hot and stressful for your dog. Plan accordingly by using shaded areas with plenty of water nearby.

The location of Smith Point County Park on Fire Island is reachable only by crossing a bridge. It is possible to reach the bridge from the north via the William Floyd Parkway. However, visitors will be surprised to discover there are tolls once they drive past the bridge and enter the park’s large parking lot.
