The Roman Catholic Church of St Boniface Martyr Church in Sea Cliff, New York of which the Rev. Wiliam J. Gately is pastor, will celebrate the golden jubilee of its founding with a solemn high mass of thanksgiving next Sunday at 11 a.m. at which Bishop Thomas E Molloy will preside. Adjoining the church is a modern school where a parish jubilee entertainment and dance will be held next Friday evening.
Fifty years ago the Catholics of Sea Cliff received the news that they were to have a church in the village. Previously their religious requirements were provided by a priest from the adjoining village of Glen Cove. But in the Spring of 1898 the parish of St Boniface Martyr Church was inaugurated by its founder pastor, the Rev. James J. Donohue.
In commemoration of that event in the history of Sea Cliff, the present parishioners of the church will hold a series of golden jubilee celebrations. Next Sunday a solemn mass of thanksgiving will be offered at 11 a.m. at which Bishop Thomas E. Molloy will preside.
The Rev. William J. Gately, the ninth and present pastor of the church, will be the celebrant of the mass. Father Gately was appointed its pastor April 23, 1946. He was formerly assistant pastor of the Church of Our Lady of Refuge, this borough, and succeeded the late Rev. Charles B. Garvey.
The present handsome St Boniface Martyr Church and its property, including one of the most modern schools in the county, as well as the rectory and the convent for the nuns, who teach in the school, are the achievements of the zealous pastors serving the parish through the years.
The parish school has a spacious auditorium where the parishioners gather for social affairs. It will be the scene of the public jubilee entertainment and dance to be held next Friday evening.
Assisting Father Gately at the mass of thanksgiving will be the Rev. James Bradley and the Rev. Cornelius Toomey, both former curates at the church, as deacon and subdeacon. The Rev. Joseph F. Canning, present assistant at the church, will be the master of ceremonies. The sermon will be preached by Monsignor Richard McHugh, rector of Cathedral College. Deacons of honor to Bishop Molloy will be Monsignor Francis P. Connelly and Monsignor John J. Boardman.
Another solemn high mass of thanksgiving to those attended by the children of the parish will be offered next Friday at 8 a.m. Father Gately will be the celebrant, assisted by the Rev. George F. O'Hara, assistant pastor, as deacon and Father Canning as subdeacon.
Father Gately will also offer the solemn high requiem mass for deceased priests and parishioners of the church next Saturday at 9 a.m. He will again be assisted by Father O'Hara and Father Canning.
