Harborfront Park was developed on an ongoing basis to provide a multi-purpose park facility by the Village of Port Jefferson around Port Jefferson , New York. The complex is located on the site of a former shipyard and Mobil Oil terminal at the entrance to the Port Jefferson Harbor. In 1997, the Village bought the 5.1 acre property in order to create a park with access to the waterfront. In October 2000 the Village's Master Plan for this project was published. Since then they have adopted a step by step approach for implementing this plan.
At the east end of Harborfront Park on the Chandlery Waterfront, a playground and picnic area was completed in December 2001 to create Harborfront Park's first phase. In summer, children enjoy cooling off in the mist from the frog spray feature, as well as a picnic lunch.
A new bulkhead, rip rap protection, and landscaping were added to the Promenade in September 2004 along with a new bulkhead. The Promenade is unique in its design and complements the setting and environment. In shades of tan, blue, and pink, the walkway was made with sand and gravel, echoing the color patterns in the boulders. While walking on the Promenade, you can feel the soft, warm sand beneath your feet. A set of stainless steel balusters lines the northwest corner of the Waterway, maximizing the view of the Harbor.
There are several different sea grasses and Ragusa roses in the landscaping that have grown naturally along the harbor banks. There are low, grassy dunes on the south side of the Promenade. Some glacial boulders on the north side have specially designed lights reclaimed from LI sand mining sites. These bulkhead lights resemble bollards that used to stand in front of ships making their way into port. A meandering pathway and a tall pole light illuminate the Promenade within the rocky seat wall, and underneath is a halogen floor light casting a warm glow within the entire outdoor space.
During the final stage of construction, the Great Lawn was completed, which includes landscaping, paths, and basketball courts.
Historic Chandlery Building exterior reconstruction has been completed, stabilizing the structure and repairing cracks in the walls, repainting the bricks, and repairing the leaking roof. All the windows and doors in the Chandlery were replaced in November 2006, and the ground floor is to be used in the future as a children’s maritime museum.
The Harborfrolnt Park has turned into a jewel of the Village, a waterfront spot that all can enjoy!
