The hike starts at the parking lot for Trail View State Park and you'll be following the white blaze of the Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt trail in Massapequa. The first quarter-mile follows a steady incline before descending on switchbacks with many large trees. Once three-quarters of a mile in, it turns left off Woodbury Road onto an intersection by FM 757 and continues to follow as if its main purpose is just getting down into New York's heartland where there are what seems like endless acres waiting to be explored!

The trail is a fun adventure for the whole family. The Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail has many twists and turns, as well as some ups and downs to keep everyone on their toes. After crossing Woodbury-Syosset Road at a crosswalk, it follows undulating terrain until it climbs up that big hill with an old car sitting there in ruins from years ago! It levels off after that just before you come across another unmarked trail which leads down wooden steps towards the Port Jefferson Branch of the Long Island Rail Road.

Upon reaching the bottom of the steps, it turns right onto a level path. Continue ahead on the path marked by white blazes, which will lead you to another set of wooden steps. This pathway, now marked with a blue blaze, keeps going straight. While the blue-blazed trail is designated for bicycles, the white-blazed trail is exclusively for hikers. Long Island Greenbelt Trail Conference constructed wooden steps to provide a more attractive route for hikers due to the use of bicycles on steep trails along this trail.

Following the second wooden staircase, the white-blazed trail turns left onto a dirt road and railroad tracks can be seen immediately on the left. Just beyond the park, you will see the blue-blazed bike trail entering from the right side. Both trails go through an underpass beneath the Long Island Rail Road, before forking left onto the private Whitney Lane.

Now the trail turns left and passes through a bamboo thicket. A few miles further, the blue and white blazes turn right. The white-blazed trail just ahead turns right, leaving the blue-blazed bike trail and ascending by a wooden staircase. Upon reaching the top, you pass through a wooden stile, which was made to prevent bicycles from using the hiker-only trail.

Continuing on the trail, it now turns right onto a surfaced path, but as it approaches a fork, it goes left at a fork and crosses another bike trail marked with white triangles on either side. A quarter-mile further on, the Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail bears to the right onto a wider path, and just ahead, it forks into a yellow-blazed trail (at this writing, there are only yellow blazes). Follow the yellow and white blazes for the next 1.2 miles.
