June 25, 1911, marked the beginning of the construction of St. Joseph Church. In Bologna, Italy, a church named San Stefano is said to have influenced the Romanesque style of architecture and design. The only church of this kind in the United States at that time was St. Joseph Church, with its unique all-brick structure. John Cockerill, who also built the Museum of Natural History in Manhattan, was the builder on this magnificent building. The architects, Reiley and Steinback, were based in New York, while the builder, Reiley Associates, was based in North Babylon.

Kittanning bricks weighing over one million and a half kilograms from Pennsylvania were brought from that state to complete the construction of the cathedral. There are 125 feet of length and 60 feet of width in the Church.

June 15, 1913, the Church was formally dedicated following its first services in July 1912. Carrara marble was used in the construction of the altar, which was installed in 1913 for Christmas mass.

The 80-foot dome houses a Cyclus of 12 frescoes done by Maxwell Franz Friederang in the St. Peter-Hall style. As one of the finest examples of this style in the U.S., this church brings a touch of elegance.

The corner of St. Stations of the Cross church houses a piece of sculpture depicting St. Joseph in his workshop, working on what would become Jesus' manger cradle. The first managers were made of wood and straw.
