Since its inception in 1895, Babylon Public Library has served the residents of the Babylon Union Free School District. In 2000, the district had a population of 11,973 and an area of 9.6 square miles. Much of the district is within Babylon Village's boundaries; however, not all the Village is within the district's boundaries. School district school district's northwest portion lies outside of the Village boundary in West Babylon.

The library's first home was on Main Street in Babylon Village. It moved to its current location at the southern end of South Carll Avenue, next door to the north wing of the school district administration building, and again expanded with a new addition that opened in October 2006.

The expansion project cost $5.1 million and included an elevator for disabled access; improved climate control including air conditioning; green space; increased seating capacity for computers using updated technology such as LCD screens instead of CRT monitors (which are no longer manufactured); adaptive reuse of office space formerly occupied by Mrs. Wessinger Elementary School teachers during 2005-2006 while that facility underwent renovations; additional parking spaces adjacent to both wings for staff members who work at night or weekends when it is not possible to park in the adjacent parking lot due to restrictions; and increased storage for books, DVDs, CDs and other materials.

The expansion of Babylon Public Library's physical space coincides with an increase in its circulation numbers over the past decade from around 300 per day to more than 500 items checked out on many days. This is because it has become a community place where people can not only get information about what is happening in town--whether they like news or want advice on home improvement projects.

The Babylon Public Library is governed by a five-member Board of Trustees that is elected by the citizens of Babylon and that meets every month in open meetings. The one in charge of day-to-day operations is overseen by the Library's qualified Director. Professional librarians and support staff are employed by the Library to assist in providing services to the public.

The Library's mission is: "To provide a safe, welcoming environment and to offer materials that promote learning, literacy and lifelong skills for all ages. The Babylon Public Library seeks to encourage the reading of quality literature while supplying up-to-date information on current events and enrichment opportunities."

Over 500 people visit the library every day in search of books--many coming back repeatedly with their favorite titles. They also utilize its computers (with free internet access) often as they do research or complete job applications online; check out DVDs from our video collection; attend programs sponsored by other organizations such as Alcoholics Anonymous meetings or children's story hours; relax in one of four large comfortable chairs near the fireplace in our Reading Room area designed especially for reading, or meet their friends for a game of chess in our Games Room.

The Babylon Public Library is surrounded by many attractions. The library’s location in the heart of town offers residents and visitors a variety of shopping, dining, cultural arts and entertainment options just steps away from the building.
